ABOUT US

The passing of Grant MacKay on January 8, 2007 from an extremely short battle with pancreatic cancer was huge loss to all who knew him. As my best friend, husband, and business partner, my world fell apart. It has taken me three years to finally do this update to our web site.

Our usual trip "up coast" during the summer of 2006 was one of the best we had. We had no hurricane force winds or landslides crashing beside our boat to contend with. There was minimal fog and the seas stayed relatively calm throughout. Surrounded by whales and dolphins in glorious sunshine right through until October, there was a lot to photograph and video tape. Grant even managed to catch our annual halibut; it was, after all, his turn to catch one since we alternated yearly without trying.

Since his passing there have been many changes. Moving off of Savary Island has simplified things for me. I am continuing to shoot videos, record whale communications with the hydrophone and have taken over Grant's still cameras to also shoot stills. As you can image, there is a fair bit of juggling of equipment, and have switched to shooting stills in digital format only. As Grant said about digital photography, "it's instant gratification".

Although single handing SaltWash while towing the skiff, PropWash, can be a bit challenging at times, I continue to operate our boats and have been up the coast every year with them to continue the photography and videography of SG Images. Grant's ashes are scattered in one of our favourite spots.

My focus over the past three years has been mostly on Cetaceans - whales, dolphins and porpoises. I have recently started another web site aimed solely at this topic called Whales and Dolphins of BC which covers specific information on the How To, Where To, and When To see, identify and view whales, dolphins, porpoises and other marine mammals of BC.

SG Images is now 21 years old and although this site requires a major overhaul, the business is alive and well. I can be contacted by telephone 604-485-9138 or you can reach me by email info@sgimages.ca

I have left the previous About Us information below:

SG Images is a husband and wife team based on Savary Island. We are currently celebrating fifteen years in business. Our love of nature and the coastal waters of the Pacific Northwest took us out of Vancouver and brought us to this small island located in Georgia Strait on the Sunshine Coast of western Canada.

With the flexibility of our own boat, we cruise into areas few people have ever been. Our focus is on photography along the ruggedly scenic BC coast. Images of whales, wildlife, nature and coastal life from a marine perspective are our specialty. Our greatest pleasure is to be in the midst of it all with cameras in hand.

Twice a year we travel parts of our coast to capture images that portray the power and serenity that this coast has to offer. Our journeys extend the length of our coast from the northern most reaches of the Inside Passage through Desolation Sound and Sunshine Coast to Vancouver in the south.

Our images have been published as magazine covers and inside features. Articles, written by request from editors or freelance, have also been published.

We use Canon EOS cameras with both Canon and Tamron lenses in film and digital formats. We are also starting to compile video footage which will be available on our site at a later date.

This site offers only a sampling of our photography. If you would like to add one of our images in your next project or publication, or if you are looking for a specific type of image, please contact us.
